Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County’s (CCE) fall surveys of the Peconic Bay have found the highest juvenile bay scallop densities in three seasons, according to The Suffolk Times. CCE has worked to rebuild the population since a 2019 die-off of nearly all harvestable adults. Its Orient Harbor spawner sanctuary, where seed scallops are raised in protected waters, may have helped boost wild numbers this year.
The Robins Island Foundation, an affiliate of The Moore Charitable Foundation, has helped support the Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Marine Program in revitalizing the Peconic Bay scallop populations.
