Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, in partnership with The Island School’s Cape Eleuthera Institute (CEI), has announced the first successful hatch at its new Queen Conch Mobile Lab in The Bahamas. The Moore Bahamas Foundation, an affiliate of The Moore Charitable Foundation, provided early planning support for the project. The mobile lab, a self-contained, solar-powered hatchery on wheels, is designed to raise up to 2,000 juvenile queen conch annually for restoration across the Caribbean. Native to Florida and the Caribbean, the queen conch plays a vital role in maintaining healthy seagrass ecosystems by grazing on algae, but decades of overfishing and habitat loss have pushed the species to threatened status.
