Global Fishing Watch, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving widespread access to data on the world’s oceans, has created a new portal that makes application programming interfaces (APIs) available to the public for free. With key support from the Moore Charitable Foundation, the portal was established to give users more convenient access to fishing vessel data that they can then use in their own research. The APIs offer map tiling, visualizations of fishing activity and events, and the ability to search for vessels. By providing users with this important information, Global Fishing Watch hopes to make access to scientific data more equitable and to give ocean advocates the tools they need to effectively promote ocean conservation and marine resource protection.
