The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC)
“SELC’s partnership with The Orton Foundation is an ideal collaboration: a charitable foundation with a commitment to protecting the environment of the lower Cape Fear region and a nonprofit that uses the power of the law to turn that commitment into results.” – Derb Carter, Director, SELC North Carolina Office
The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) is a legal and policy nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the environment of the Southeast and the people who depend on it. Working at the local, state, and national level, SELC strengthens environmental laws, promotes wise environmental policies, and stops environmental abuses. Over the course of nearly 30 years, SELC has focused on a wide variety of issues affecting the Atlantic coast, resulting in the preservation of myriad rivers, coastlines, wetlands, forests, and communities.
Support from Louis Bacon and The Orton Foundation has allowed SELC to bring its extensive expertise to the Cape Fear region of North Carolina. Together we are protecting the essential character of this remarkable place from threats as diverse as toxic coal ash, industrial development, and the ongoing danger of offshore drilling and seismic testing looming over the entire Southeastern coast.
